Gulf Bridge International

Gulf Bridge International (GBI), which operates submarine networks and terrestrial fiber-optic networks throughout the Middle East and onward to other parts of the world, has signed a supply agreement with Ciena. GBI will deploy Ciena’s Converged Packet-Optical Networking portfolio to upgrade its fiber-optic infrastructure.

Speaking on the occasion of the deal, Abdulla Al Rwaili Executive Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of GBI said, “We have recognized that the ever-increasing bandwidth usage in the region has created a demand for customized services and greater network upgrades. The investments in greater network intelligence will help us deliver on the current and future needs of our customers and partners.”

The upgrades include the addition of 100-Gbps and 200-Gbps capabilities on GBI’s undersea cable network. Ciena will supply its 6500 packet-optical transport platforms, which will leverage the company’s latest WaveLogic 3 Extreme chipset, as well as GeoMesh submarine network technology and E-Suite integrated packet switching capabilities.
