Last week, Huawei announced that they and Telefonica Chile will deploy the world’s first commercial OTN-based 400G wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) network this year using 100G and 400G technologies. This will be the industry’s fastest metropolitan WDM network based on 400G OTN technology. As standards have not yet been established, Huawei will deploy their proprietary solution utilizing coherent 100G technology, and also PDM-16QAM-based coherent 400G technology to deliver bandwidth for data centers in Santiago. The bandwidth is required to support LTE and IPTV traffic.

History has shown that the first company to market a new technology has greater influence in setting the standards that are later agreed to and developed. Will this deployment offer Huawei a strategic advantage over Cisco, Ciena/Nortel, Alcatel Lucent and Fujitsu? Only time will tell. But if history is any indication, Huawei may be the one to beat in optical transport.
