Earlier today, the European Commission (EC) approved the merger of Nokia & Alcatel-Lucent (see http://www.truepulse.com/nokia-takes-control-of-alcatel-lucent/ ).  This result was not surprising, but you never know for sure until it happens.

In the announcement, “The Commission concluded that the transaction would not raise competition concerns, in particular because the parties are not close competitors and since a number of strong global competitors will remain active after the transaction.”

The EC’s approval paves the way for the merger.  As a result, on a day where the Dow Jones was down almost a percentage point, Alcatel-Lucent shares were up 2 percentage points.
